In 1984 Tats Lau placed an advertisement in Rock Biweekly ("搖擺雙週刊") looking for a lead vocal for a band. Anthony Wong Yiu-ming, then a DJ on Commercial Radio channel 2, went to audition and tried Wham!'s "Careless Whisper" and the British band Culture Club's "Time (Clock Of The Heart)", and the two fitted at once. There is another account that they met and auditioned in 1985. BBC News Chinese gives 1985, and records that Anthony Wong Yiu-ming was hired after the audition, formed Tat Ming Pair with Tats Lau, and formally debuted as a singer.

In 1985 the veteran broadcaster 俞琤 named the two "Tat Ming Pair", and introduced them to PolyGram Hong Kong. The name takes one character from each of the two names.

Tat Ming Pair was formed in Hong Kong in 1985, an experimental Cantonese pop duo of composer Tats Lau and lead vocal Anthony Wong Yiu-ming. On March 27, 1986 a first EP, "達明一派", was released, and the duo formally debuted from there. In September the same year the first full-length album, "達明一派II", came out. In 1986 Anthony Wong Yiu-ming also starred in 潘源良's film "戀愛季節", working with 李麗珍.

On TVB's variety show "歡樂今宵" in the 1980s, artists 盧海鵬 and 廖偉雄 sang "壽頭記" under the name "撻成一塊", parodying Tat Ming Pair's original "石頭記". In the 1992 Hong Kong film "富貴黃金屋", actors 何啟南 and 邵傳勇 played "撻成一塊", again parodying Tat Ming Pair.

After a first concert in 1990, Anthony Wong Yiu-ming and Tats Lau announced a split. In January 1991 Anthony Wong Yiu-ming formally went solo and signed with 音樂工廠.

After going independent, the style still centered on electronic music and other newer elements. In the 1995 awards year "春光乍洩" won several prizes. In the 1996 awards year "每日一禁果" (Tat Ming Pair's first reunion) won prizes including Commercial Radio's supreme song prize. In 2010 "我的二十一世紀" won the Chinese Music Media Awards' "世紀十年卓越粵語專輯獎".

In 1999 Anthony Wong Yiu-ming took part in founding the music production company 人山人海. In 2001 Anthony Wong Yiu-ming won Best Alternative Artist at the first Chinese Music Media Awards. In November 2002 the live album Acoustic came out. In July 2003 the new songwriting album "我的廿一世紀" came out. In August 2004 "明日之歌" came out, a tribute to composer Joseph Koo that re-sings Joseph Koo's works. In March 2006 Anthony Wong Yiu-ming and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra made a large music production together. In October 2008 the folk-colored album King of the Road came out.

In 2016 Tat Ming Pair announced a reunion and rejoined PolyGram as a band, later under the parent company Universal Music Hong Kong. In 2018 Tat Ming Pair received the 2018 Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs "Golden Needle".

On when Anthony Wong Yiu-ming came out as gay, the Chinese Wikipedia records that Anthony Wong Yiu-ming later said it had already been public as early as 1990. BBC News Chinese records a public announcement in 2012, and that Anthony Wong Yiu-ming, together with Denise Ho and other artists and former legislators 何秀蘭 and 陳志全, founded the gay-rights group "Big Love Alliance".
