About the artist
Tat Ming Pair is a Hong Kong two-person pop group formed of Tats Lau and Anthony Wong Yiu-ming; Tats Lau mainly composes, Anthony Wong Yiu-ming sings. Anthony Wong Yiu-ming was born June 16, 1962; in 1984 served as a DJ at Commercial Radio, hosting "早晨星期一", "明曲晩唱" and "突破時刻". Tats Lau placed an advertisement in the already-closed magazine "搖擺雙週刊" recruiting a collaborator; there are two accounts of the year of the advertisement: two Wikipedia articles record 1984, while the year listed by Sing Tao Headline is 1985, saying a newspaper advertisement was placed that year seeking a band partner; two other Chinese- and English-language articles also place the relevant events in 1985, respectively writing that the two met that year and Anthony Wong Yiu-ming answered a singer-wanted ad in a music magazine, and that Tats Lau placed an ad seeking a singer that year, Anthony Wong Yiu-ming went to audition, and the two "clicked at once". In 1985 veteran broadcaster 俞琤 named the two Tat Ming Pair and introduced them into PolyGram; the newspaper, relaying Tats Lau's account: in the second minute 俞琤 said, your two-person combination will be called Tat Ming Pair.
In March 1986 released a same-titled mini-album; on March 27 issued the first EP "達明一派", and formally debuted thereby; in September released the first full-length LP "達明一派II", the Discogs main-version title being "達明一派II - Kiss Me Goodbye". In 1987 released the second full-length album "石頭記", containing the title track and "馬路天使" and "後窗". In January 1988 released "我等著你回來"; the English Wikipedia treats the disc as Hong Kong's first concept album, the theme involving emigration. There was also "你還愛我嗎?". Another article on the site lists "禁色" as one of the earliest Hong Kong pop songs to treat a homosexual theme, later becoming an LGBT anthem. In 1989 released "意難平", the Chinese title taken from Dream of the Red Chamber. The last disc before the split was 1990's "神經".
English Wikipedia classifies the two's music as a blend of Cantopop, synthpop, new wave and electronic dance, the lyrics reflecting social, political and literary themes, and records influence from British musicians such as Pet Shop Boys and David Bowie; Chinese Wikipedia's account is similar, saying they were deeply influenced by British rock, electronic music and the like, the songs involving politics, society and emotion. In lyric-writing continued to collaborate with 潘源良, 周耀輝 and 陳少琪; most album covers were directed by 張叔平.
In 1990, after holding the first Hong Kong Coliseum concert "我愛你達明一派演唱會", announced solo development; after this concert Anthony Wong Yiu-ming and Tats Lau announced the split, in January 1991 formally going solo, and signing with 音樂工廠; the English Wikipedia records an amicable split in 1991 over differences of musical opinion and also wanting to do other work. In January 1992 Anthony Wong Yiu-ming released the first solo album "信望愛"; in the 1995 awards year, with "春光乍洩", received multiple awards; on June 16, 1999, with 蔡德才, 梁基爵 and others, founded 人山人海. In March 2006 collaborated with the Hong Kong Philharmonic on the large-scale production "港樂 vs. 黃耀明 電幻狂想曲"; in October 2008 released the folk-influenced album "King of the Road"; in November 2011 released "拂了一身還滿", the first album mainly in Mandarin since 1994.
In 1996, on the tenth anniversary, regrouped for the first time and put out a new album; with "每日一禁果" received the Ultimate Song Chart Supreme Song Grand Award; in October of the same year released "萬歲!萬歲!萬萬歲!", and held a large-scale concert at Queen Elizabeth Stadium. In 2004 reunited again, joined Emperor, and put out "寂寞的人有福了", which took tenth place in the Ultimate Song Chart Top Ten. In July 2005, for the twentieth anniversary, released the album "The Party". In 2012 announced reuniting again, joining Media Asia, putting out "It's My Party"; in April did four consecutive nights of "兜兜轉轉演演唱唱會" at the Hong Kong Coliseum; on August 30, 2013 performed again in Guangzhou. On April 23, 2012, at the third night of Tat Ming Pair's twenty-five-years-in-the-industry Hong Kong Coliseum solo shows, after singing "禁色" and "忘記他是她", Anthony Wong Yiu-ming announced coming out. Oriental Daily News quoted the original words: "I am a homosexual, I am Gay, a gay man!" Anthony Wong Yiu-ming then said identity had never been concealed. BBC News Chinese records a public announcement in 2012 of being homosexual, and founding Big Love Alliance with Denise Ho and others. 今周刊 records that Big Love Alliance was formally registered as a non-profit on January 1, 2013, determined to fight for LGBT equal rights; Wikipedia records that on April 1 of the same year Anthony Wong Yiu-ming formed the organization together with a number of people in society. On January 3, 2019, Tat Ming Pair received the Gold Needle Award presented by RTHK at the Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards, with an introduction by 林二汶; BBC News Chinese dates the receipt of that award as a member of Tat Ming Pair to 2018.
In November 2020, HK01 recorded that the six shows of "達明一派 REPLAY 意難平 / 神經 LIVE" had "concluded satisfactorily", Season 1 fully performing 1989's "意難平" and 1990's "神經"; the series was self-funded and hosted by 人山人海, and under the gathering-restriction order Queen Elizabeth Stadium opened only 75% of seats, six shows in all.
