About the artist
Charlene Choi is a Hong Kong female singer and actress, born on November 22, 1982, in Vancouver, Canada, and raised in Hong Kong. She attended Precious Blood Primary School, Marymount Secondary School, and Rosaryhill School, and began working part-time as a model for magazines and advertisements in Form Three. Before her debut, she also appeared as an extra playing a student in the film "自從他來了".
A television drama role served as a bridge from part-time model to signed entertainer. In 2000, Charlene Choi filmed the youth drama "青春@Y2K", produced by RTHK's Television Division. She was subsequently introduced by a person in charge of "Yes!" magazine and signed with Emperor Entertainment Group. After signing, she formed Twins with Gillian Chung, and the duo then debuted with the song "明愛暗戀補習社".
Film work began early in the group's career. Charlene Choi appeared in "戀愛起義" in 2001, which led to the opportunity to star in "常在我心", her first role as a film's female lead. The following year, she received a Best New Performer nomination at the 21st Hong Kong Film Awards for the film. "我老婆唔夠秤", in which she starred with Ekin Cheng, opened in October.
"下一站…天后" marked an intersection between Charlene Choi's early film career and solo singing. The film was released during the 2003 SARS outbreak; Charlene Choi sang the solo version of "下一站天后", included on Twins' album "Touch of Love".
In film awards, Charlene Choi won Best Actress at the 11th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival for "妄想", and Best Actress and Most Popular Actress at the 12th Hong Kong Golden Bauhinia Awards for "戲王之王", while continuing to study acting.
During the group's early years, its live performances soon reached the Hong Kong Coliseum. In September 2002, Charlene Choi performed with Twins in three consecutive "Ichiban興奮演唱會" concerts; in January 2006, they held four "一時無兩演唱會" concerts at the Coliseum. The group also won the 2003 "四台聯頒音樂大獎——傳媒大獎".
Twins later expanded its work into the Mandarin-language market. The group released its first Mandarin album, "見習愛神", in 2005, followed by the Mandarin album "八十塊環遊世界" in 2006; Charlene Choi sang solo on "一個人看電影", included on the latter. The 2007 songs "飄零燕" and "相反詞" were included on "我們相愛6年" and "Twins Party", respectively.
Beyond the group's recordings, Charlene Choi gradually experimented with solo singing and songwriting. In 2005, she sang "魚蛋歌" with 苦榮 and wrote the lyrics for the Cantonese version of "愛", a song from the film "情癲大聖". In 2006, "你不是好情人", which she composed herself over three years, was released, and the solo version was included on Twins' album "Ho Hoo Tan".
Her first steps toward a solo career also included publishing and a charity record. In July 2008, Charlene Choi co-authored "單·親·愛" with her father; that August, she released the single "Make A Wish", with all proceeds going to charity. Around the same time, she also sang the Mandarin and Cantonese versions of "小酒窩" with JJ Lin.
In 2009, her solo singing career developed along parallel album and EP release tracks. Charlene Choi sent "二缺一" to radio in February, released a solo Cantonese album of the same name in April, and followed it with the Cantonese EP "Another Me" in October.
Ticketed performances also began after she launched her solo career. "蔡卓妍、光良Make A Wish童話音樂會", held in December, was her first ticketed concert after going solo.
Her solo records subsequently moved between Cantonese and Mandarin. She released her first solo Mandarin album, "As a Sa", in June 2010, followed by the Cantonese EP "Beauty Remains" in mid-October that year. In 2011, "年年" topped the 903 Professional Recommendation chart, Metro Radio Hits Music Chart, Jade's Solid Gold chart, and RTHK Radio 2's Chinese Pop Chart.
Her subsequent Cantonese albums followed different production approaches. "Montage", released in 2012, was composed and produced entirely by Eric Kwok, while "Blooming" followed in 2013.
Performance work beyond music extended to the stage and voice acting. In July 2009, Charlene Choi appeared in "櫻桃小丸子之灰姑娘音樂劇" at the Shouson Theatre of the Hong Kong Arts Centre. She also provided voices for "小飛俠2004" and "藍精靈:迷失的村莊".
Her behind-the-scenes creative work included writing and directing short films. In 2007, Charlene Choi served as screenwriter and director of the short film for Kary Ng's "想這樣得那樣"; in 2009, she co-directed "放得低" with 莊少榮.
Her later film and drama performances continued to garner awards. In December 2019, Charlene Choi attended the award ceremonies of the Macao International Movie Festival and the Macao International Television Festival, winning Best Actress for "非分熟女" and the web series "PTU機動部隊".
