About the artist
Twins is a Hong Kong female pop duo, made up of 蔡卓妍 (Ah Sa) and 鍾欣潼 (Ah Kiu), signed with Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG) in 2000, and formally formed and debuted on May 18, 2001. The Chinese Wikipedia says Twins has become the longest-lived Chinese female group across the mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
鍾欣潼 (Gillian Chung) was born January 21, 1981 in Hong Kong. 蔡卓妍 (Charlene Choi) was born November 22, 1982 in Vancouver, Canada.
The group began its career in the summer of 2001. Last.fm records that what Twins is best known for is "女校男生" on the first EP. In August 2001 the first EP, "Twins (AVEP)", came out, led by "Open Love, Secret Love, Tutoring Institute". In January 2002 a third EP, "Twins", came out. In May the first album, a double disc, "我們的紀念冊", came out. In August the second album, "Amazing Album", also a double disc, came out, with eleven songs on the CD and three videos on the DVD.
The Chinese Wikipedia records that with "愛情當入樽", "我們的紀念冊" and "雙生兒", Twins became a top-ten-selling Cantonese record at the IFPI Hong Kong record-sales awards, and that "我們的紀念冊" was the highest-selling Cantonese record of 2002. That year every record sold strongly and every concert was full, and films and television dramas all flowered. In 2002 a first concert was held, and in 2003 there were three more in Guangzhou.
In September 2003 a fourth album of ten songs, "Evolution", came out in a new look. In January 2004 a fifth album of eleven songs, "Magic", came out. In June "Girl Power", on the theme of the Olympics, came out. The same year four children's albums, "Singing in the Twins Wonderland", came out, with English nursery songs and stories. The second volume holds twenty English children's songs and three fairy tales the two told themselves, for children to learn English by listening.
At the start of 2005 a first Mandarin album, Trainee Cupid, came out. In June a sixth studio album, "Samba", came out, led by "Samba Queen" and "Pink Guitar".
In January 2006 a third run of four shows at the Coliseum, "一時無兩演唱會", was held. Last.fm records that Emperor once hinted this concert might be the two's last, that a magazine also printed a report that Twins would split after the concert, and that in an interview on the TVB programme "娛樂直播" the two said they had discussed the question with the company and afterwards announced at the celebration dinner "Twins will never break up". In May the same year both went to the MTV Asia Awards in Thailand, and the split rumour was cleared. At the 2006 Hong Kong entertainment awards, 蔡卓妍 admitted in tears the outside criticism of Twins' singing, and hoped the next year would be better.
In 2007 a ninth studio album, "Twins Party", came out, and a new-songs-plus-best-of CD/DVD for the sixth anniversary of entering the business.
In January 2008 a third Mandarin album, "桐話妍語", came out, an autobiographical concept Mandarin album, split into the "桐話篇" and the "妍語篇". The same month the Chinese Wikipedia records that 鍾欣潼 was caught in the indecent-photo incident, the image was damaged, and performing work paused, and that during that time 鍾欣潼 only went to mainland China for disaster relief. The English Wikipedia dates the group's temporary separation for this reason to February 2008, and the group announced a "temporary" breakup in July the same year. At the start of 2009 蔡卓妍 prepared to release a first solo album, and the first song sent to radio was "二缺一".
In 2010 the group regrouped. In January a trailer for "全城熱戀" was shot. From April 16 to 18 the Everyone Plays 2010 concert was held at the Hong Kong Coliseum. The first new record since 2008 came out on March 27, released together with 鍾欣潼's first solo album.
On April 28, 2011, nine years after the two worked together on the 2002 drama "齊天大聖孫悟空", they worked together again on the mainland Chinese drama "歡樂元帥" and held a filming kick-off ceremony. In November they were invited to be ambassadors of "Asia Game Show 2011", and sang the expo theme "上陣", and at the same time said a new Cantonese album on the theme of freedom, "2 Be Free", would come out. That album came out on March 1, 2012.
In 2013, after five years away, Twins took back the Asia-Pacific most popular female singer prize at the Top Ten Jade Solid Gold awards. On March 29 and 30, 2014 the two, with Joey Yung, Kelly Chen, Miriam Yeung, Janice Vidal, 杜汶澤 and other artists, supported composer 伍樂城 at the Coliseum show "Imagine Nation 伍樂城幻想國度作品演唱會56X Live 2014".
On November 14, 2015 Twins attended "風從東方來娛樂影響力盛典" in Shanghai, and received three honours: fifteen-year entertainment influence group, cross-field female artist of the Hong Kong and Taiwan region, and style female artist of the Hong Kong and Taiwan region. On the 29th of the same month Twins attended "2015年中國城市時尚盛典" in Xiamen and received the "亞洲榮耀組合" prize. The same year 鍾欣潼, with the album "完整愛", received the year's highest-selling Mandarin record at the IFPI Hong Kong record-sales awards, and 蔡卓妍 received the special commendation at the 2015 Osaka Asian Film Festival in Japan.
In February 2016 Twins sang the theme "天天夜夜" for the film "謀殺似水年華", a Mandarin single after five years away. In 2020 Dr reborn, a Hong Kong-listed medical-beauty brand that 鍾欣潼 had endorsed for a long time, began to invite 蔡卓妍, so the two endorsed the brand together. In March the same year, nine years apart, the two again starred together in the drama "女法醫JD", jointly produced by Emperor Entertainment and Tencent.
The English Wikipedia records that from 2001 to 2003 the group received 72 awards in all. On January 19, 2024 a new Cantonese EP, "We Are Twins 22", was released. The Chinese Wikipedia records that it set a record of four weeks as the number-one record on the Hong Kong recording-industry sales chart.
