About the artist
Gillian Chung is a Hong Kong singer and actress and a member of the girl group Twins. She was born in Hong Kong on January 21, 1981. She attended 青揚英文小學, 油麻地天主教小學, and 九龍真光中學. After returning to Hong Kong during the summer of 1999, she continued working as a part-time model and later signed with Emperor Entertainment Group.
Gillian Chung entered the entertainment industry and signed with Emperor Entertainment Group in 2000. On May 18, 2001, she formed Twins with Charlene Choi and debuted with the group with "明愛暗戀補習社."
Twins quickly began appearing at major performances and award events after debuting. In September 2002, Gillian Chung performed with the group at the Hong Kong Coliseum in "Ichiban興奮演唱會." The group later received the 2003 "四台聯頒音樂大獎—傳媒大獎." In 2004, Twins traveled to Taiwan to record in preparation for entering the Mandarin-language market.
Her film acting and group activities developed in parallel. In 2003, Gillian Chung received the audience-voted Most Popular Actress honor at the Chinese Film Media Awards. In 2005, she received her first Best Actress nomination at the 10th Golden Bauhinia Awards for starring with 吳彥祖 in "公主復仇記," and she was invited to serve as an image ambassador for the 25th Hong Kong Film Awards. Twins' Mandarin-language records also include "見習愛神" and "八十塊環遊世界."
After a period away from work, Gillian Chung resumed her entertainment career in 2009. Emperor Entertainment Group issued a formal statement announcing her return on March 10, 2009. That August, she appeared in the stage play "星爸亞爸" and released the radio single "生活在他方." Her solo song "心多" was subsequently also sent to radio, and plans were made at one point for a solo album.
Group and solo releases both resumed in 2010. In January, Gillian Chung filmed a promotional clip for the movie "全城熱戀" with Charlene Choi, marking her return as a member of Twins. On March 27, she released her first solo album, "人人彈起," while a Twins compilation of the same title was also released that day.
Live performances also resumed with the group's return. In April, Twins held three "人人彈起" concerts in Hong Kong, followed by the "人人彈起世界巡迴演唱會" tour.
After her return, Gillian Chung's dramatic work was concentrated in mainland China. In the first half of 2011, she took roles in five television dramas and one film, and won Best Actress at the Huading Awards for "女媧傳說之靈珠."
Group releases and film shoots followed one another in 2012. After participating in Twins' Cantonese album "2 Be Free," Gillian Chung began filming the movies "愛情不NG" and "葉問：終極一戰."
Solo Mandarin-language records marked a new phase in her releases. On February 14, 2013, the music video for "在一起," a duet by Gillian Chung and 胡彦斌, premiered online. On May 28, 2013, Gillian Chung released her first solo Mandarin-language album, "桐花." The album subsequently reached number three on the Hong Kong Record Merchants Association sales chart and received an IFPI Hong Kong Top 10 Best-Selling Mandarin Album award.
Her second Mandarin-language album, "完整愛," was released on June 19, 2014, with 張韶涵 joining her on the title track; a short film of the same name was released at the same time. Gillian Chung received the Asian Popular Idol Award for "完整愛"; "一輩子" received a 2014 Song of the Year award; and "星星的眼淚," her duet with 羅力威, received a 2014 Duet Song award.
Duets and group plans also featured in her work during the same period. Gillian Chung sang "全部都給你" with 吳克群 and said in an interview that she had considered inviting Charlene Choi to contribute to her solo album, but hoped that their next joint work would be a Twins album.
Television dramas and films continued to form another strand of her career. Gillian Chung played 巽芳 in the television drama "古劍奇譚," broadcast in 2014. In 2017, she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 17th Chinese Film Media Awards for the film "羅曼蒂克消亡史."
