About the artist
Jonathan Lee is a Taiwanese male singer, songwriter and music producer, born July 19, 1958 in Beitou Town, Yangmingshan Administration, Taiwan (now Beitou District, Taipei City). As a child Jonathan Lee dreamed of being a carpenter, but after meeting the guitar fell in love with music.
Jonathan Lee's mother, 潘雪華, is the daughter of 潘水生, a founding elder of the church. 潘水生 belonged to the Basay people. In junior high Jonathan Lee joined the military band. The entrance exam for the National Academy of Arts brought a failure of zero in two subjects, and that setback stirred the resolve to learn music alone. At the time, though there were small results, Jonathan Lee still could not make a living from music. The later autobiographical song "阿宗三件事" records that stretch of making music while helping the father deliver gas.
In 1982 Jonathan Lee joined 拍譜唱片, and for the first time as a producer made 鄭怡's album "小雨來得正是時候". "結束", sung with 鄭怡, became the song that made the name, and from this the production career opened. There is another account, of 1983: 鄭怡's producer 侯德健 put down record work and went to the mainland, Jonathan Lee took over as 鄭怡's producer, made the 1983 album "小雨來得正是時候" and sang the composition "結束" with 鄭怡, and became famous at one stroke. The English Wikipedia likewise dates the producer debut to 1983.
In 1984 Jonathan Lee joined Rock Records. The first production after joining was 張艾嘉's album "忙與盲", including the title lead "忙與盲" and "愛情有什麼道理". In 1987, after finding Wakin Chau and bringing Wakin Chau into Rock Records, Jonathan Lee produced Wakin Chau's first solo album, "心的方向", and opened Wakin Chau's singing career. The same year Jonathan Lee wrote the first song made with 陳淑樺, "像我這樣的單身女子".
Jonathan Lee produced 潘越雲's album "舊愛新歡", including "最愛", "小鎮醫生的故事" and the duet "舊愛新歡". The Chinese Wikipedia records that a record which pushed 陳淑樺 to the peak of the career set a sales record of a million copies for a Chinese-language record, and also gave Jonathan Lee the title "the million-seller producer", and that Jonathan Lee became a core figure at Rock Records. To make up a shortfall in one album's production budget, Jonathan Lee once sold a Mercedes and paid out of pocket to finish the later recording of that disc.
In 1995, the Chinese Wikipedia records that Sandy Lam's "Love, Sandy" was the only record Jonathan Lee produced that year.
As a writer, the Chinese Wikipedia records that Jonathan Lee is one of the most influential musicians in the Chinese-language pop scene. Well-known songs written include "飄洋過海來看你", "愛的代價", "真心英雄", "我是一隻小小鳥", "夢醒時分", "明明白白我的心", "當愛已成往事", "愛如潮水", "讓我歡喜讓我憂", "領悟", "傷痕", "陰天", "凡人歌", "鬼迷心竅", "給自己的歌", "山丘" and "新寫的舊歌". It also records that Jonathan Lee is called "the most important music producer in East Asia and Southeast Asia since the 1980s". For two records Jonathan Lee in turn wrote more than ten works, including "傷痕", "爲你我受冷風吹", "夜太黑", "不許哭" and "誘惑的街". While producing Karen Mok's "你可以 You Can", the lead song "陰天" was called, by Jonathan Lee, "the third turning" in the use of the power of words. The album on which Karen Mok's lead was "十二樓", written by Jonathan Lee, was varied in style and won best album producer at the 12th Golden Melody Awards.
Jonathan Lee found and helped Winnie Hsin, Jeff Chang, Fish Leong, Mayday and other singers. Fount Media records that the production and writing included a great many best-selling albums and classic songs, such as "夢醒時分", "領悟", "愛如潮水" and "陰天", and that Jonathan Lee is called "the godfather of Chinese-language pop".
At the invitation of director 陈凯歌's film "霸王別姬", Jonathan Lee wrote the theme "當愛已成往事", sang it with Sandy Lam, who had just joined Rock Records, and from this opened the cooperation with Sandy Lam.
In January 1986 Jonathan Lee released a first solo album, "生命中的精靈". Besides the title song it holds the first work written in the early years, "一個人", and "寂寞難耐", and eight songs including "開場白", "沒有人知道" and "你像個孩子". The album was later chosen fifth among Taiwan's hundred best albums. "1984-1989李宗盛作品集" was also released, including the new work "和自己賽跑的人".
Under Jonathan Lee's artist entry on MusicBrainz there are further release records, including "新樂園" (1989), "我(們)就是這樣" (October 1993), "愛在情歌蔓延時" (January 17, 1994), "滚石24K 24Bit珍藏版金碟系列" (1998), "凡人歌" (2002), "愛情論" (2004), "理性與感性作品音樂會" (September 28, 2007) and "作品李宗盛 (1)" (January 7, 2016).
The Chinese Wikipedia records that, as the hottest producer in the Chinese-language scene, with "a mountain of song-debts", Jonathan Lee felt doubly tired, announced a temporary leaving of the scene, and in turn held two stages of farewell concerts, "We all love Jonathan Lee" and "Jonathan Lee, a ten-year look back". In 1994, at the temporary-farewell concert at the Taipei World Trade Center, Sandy Lam was invited as a guest, and under the pressure of opinion at the time this drew bad notices. At the start of 1998 Jonathan Lee and Sandy Lam announced their marriage in Vancouver, Canada, and confirmed a pregnancy. In May 2006 Jonathan Lee held the "reason and feeling" works concert in Taipei.
In 2002 Jonathan Lee founded the handmade-guitar brand Lee Guitars and put the main energy into making guitars. Jonathan Lee said: "Making guitars is my wish and my dream. It is the work of a life." And said: "I do not know how far I can take it. But if I do not do this, Chinese guitar makers will be absent from the history of pop."
Fount Media records how Superband came about: during the 2008 Lunar New Year, 段鍾潭, the boss of Rock Records, found that two old friends who usually flew everywhere to work, Lo Ta-yu and Jonathan Lee, happened both to be in Taiwan, and asked the two to drink, eat and talk over old times; it is said that when the three gathered they had always liked to talk this way and that; that night, catalyzed by twelve bottles of red wine going down, they talked out a large plan; the next day, after the wine wore off, all three still remembered it, and decided to carry it out; 段鍾潭 separately asked Wakin Chau to drink and settled the matter; Chang Chen-yue agreed at once on a single phone call; and the super-group took shape from this.
Fount Media records that Superband, made up of Lo Ta-yu, Jonathan Lee, Wakin Chau and Chang Chen-yue, swept the whole Chinese-speaking region in a little more than a year, and also left a brilliant page at the Golden Melody Awards. In September the band held a launch in Beijing and for the first time sang "愛的初體驗" as a band. Only then were the members' places formally announced: Jonathan Lee on acoustic guitar, Wakin Chau on bass or electric guitar, Lo Ta-yu on keyboards, Chang Chen-yue on drums. In December the band released a first single, "亡命之徒". The style joined rap and rock, and Jonathan Lee and Wakin Chau had in the past almost never tried to sing rap. Wakin Chau is also one of the singers Jonathan Lee helped to debut.
On January 29, 2010 the last stop of the Superband tour sang again at the Taipei Arena. In this farewell Jonathan Lee for the first time released the new work "給自己的歌". The music had been written when the band was just formed, and the words were not begun until several months later. On the spot it drew the audience's applause. It was later included on Superband's EP "南下專線", and at one stroke won three prizes at the 22nd Golden Melody Awards: best lyric, best composition and song of the year. "Jonathan's Song" of 2011 and "Hills" of 2013 are recorded by the English Wikipedia as Jonathan Lee's own songs, and the two are recorded as each winning song of the year and best lyric, at the 22nd and the 25th Golden Melody Awards.
In September 2017 it was announced that Signature Theatre, in Arlington, Virginia, a past Tony Award winner, would help develop an original Chinese-language musical based on the music, "Road to Heaven: The Jonathan Lee Musical", performed in both Mandarin and English.
