About the artist

Lai Man-wang is the drummer for the Hong Kong band RubberBand. Nicknamed 泥鯭, he was born on August 30, 1974. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Materials Technology from City University of Hong Kong in 1996 and graduated from a Master of Philosophy program in Physics and Materials Science in 1999; before entering the music industry, he worked as a programmer.

In addition to playing drums in the band, Lai Man-wang has participated in singing and cross-disciplinary collaborations. In 2009, he collaborated with the band and Jan Lamb on "夾硬泥," marking the first time he sang lead on one of the band's songs; in 2010, he and Jan Lamb also filmed an EPS commercial.

The band announced its independence and founded R Flat in 2016; explaining why they would not sign with a new company, 泥鯭 said, "After working for others for a while, we wanted to be our own bosses too. During eight years with record companies, we built up connections and learned the music-production workflow. Now we are simply streamlining things for greater flexibility: everyone can sit down at the same table for a meal and hold a meeting at the same time, without the need for formulaic agenda items." Looking back on the preparations for independence, Lai Man-wang said that after the members left their existing jobs and committed themselves fully, they were soon able to make a living, but the period when they had not yet completely left their former company—when they could neither be too active nor suspend their activities—was the most difficult part of the transition.
