About the artist
RubberBand is a Hong Kong pop band. The members are lead vocal 6 號, guitarist and leader 阿正, bass guitar 阿偉, and drummer 泥鯭. Their English names, in that order, are Mau Hou-cheong, Clement Fung Ting-ching, Lee Siu-wai and Lai Man-wang.
Lead vocal 6 號 (繆浩昌) graduated in 2002 from the Department of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, then entered RTHK Television as an assistant director, until the five members met in 2004. In 2005 RubberBand was formally formed as a five-person group.
In 2006 the band took its own work to record companies to make a record. Mark Lui noticed the work and signed the band to Gold Typhoon. The Chinese Wikipedia instead dates the signing to 2007.
On September 26, 2008 the first record, "Apollo 18", came out, including "一早地下鐵", "遊車河", "小涼伴" and "Tears". The same year, at the Commercial Radio chart awards, the band won the Commercial Radio new-force group gold.
In 2009 the band first won the Commercial Radio group gold and the Jade Solid Gold group gold, and the same year also won the Metro Radio hit band prize. The Commercial Radio group gold was given on January 1, 2009, when the band had only just debuted and sent songs to radio. On July 24 the second album, "Beaming", came out, including "天台飛人", "阿波羅", "夏令時間", "夾硬泥" and "衝". From December 1 to 6 a one-week exhibition, "Behind the Mission: RubberBand", was held, a small summing-up of two years of music.
In 2010 "SimpleLoveSong" first won the Commercial Radio supreme song prize. The same year keyboardist 藝深 (former name 藝琛) announced leaving the band. The English Wikipedia records that keyboardist Kelvin Ngai Sum left in October 2010 for health reasons. In June the same year, on the eve of the South Africa World Cup, the single "細街盃" came out, written for African immigrants living in Hong Kong.
On March 18, 2011 the cover album "Dedicated To..." came out. In 2012 the album "Easy" first won the Commercial Radio supreme record prize. On December 9 the band first stepped onto the Coliseum stage for one show, "RubberBand Easy Concert 演唱會 2012".
In February 2013 the band joined ASIA LP ("寰亞唱片") and signed a management contract. The band said that after moving to ASIA LP the first work was to make new songs and put out records, that the musical style would not change, but that each record should feel different. On November 8 and 9, 2014 the concert "RubberBand Live at Q.E.S. 2014" was held at Queen Elizabeth Stadium.
On January 8, 2016 the album "Gotta Go" came out. The same year the band formally became independent, and from December 13 to 15 held a first concert after independence, "呢度", at the MacPherson Stadium in Mong Kok, Hong Kong. The English Wikipedia instead dates independence to 2018, and records that the band set up its own label, R flat. In an interview 6 號 said the point of the 2016 "呢度" concert was that, after leaving the record company, the band itself found a way to run things.
In 2018, the tenth year since debut, the band shot fashion photos with the help of image director 張蚊. On the first album after becoming independent, "HOURS", "未來見" put RubberBand into the last five of the Commercial Radio song-I-like-most prize for the first time. The Chinese Wikipedia records that the song was again in the last five of the same prize the next year, the first time a song had reached the last five twice, and records that it was the hot favourite for the 2018 supreme song prize but in the end only took third among the Commercial Radio top ten. In 2019, for the score of the film "逆流大叔" and for singing the theme "逆流之歌", the band received two song prizes at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
For the ninth album, "i", RubberBand went to Japan on purpose and brought in a thirteen-person band for a music experiment. The band's "!" concert was also unlike an ordinary online concert: musician Patrick Lui, thirteen wind players, two backing vocalists and one percussionist performed together.
At the start of 2020, at the 2019 Commercial Radio chart awards, the band took back the Commercial Radio group I like most after nine years, and held it again the next year.
In April 2021 the band held a second run of four Coliseum concerts, "RubberBand Ciao演唱會 2021". The song of the same name, "Ciao", won the Commercial Radio supreme song prize at that year's chart awards.
In March 2023 the band announced a first world tour, named Ciao. The announced route included Western European stops such as London, Manchester, Berlin and Amsterdam.
