About the artist
Tsai Chin is a female singer and actress from Taiwan, born on December 22, 1957. The path of her early life stretched from Zuoying in Kaohsiung to Neihu in Taipei: Tsai Chin was born in Zuoying District, Kaohsiung, moved to Neihu Township, Taipei County, at the age of three, and attended Neihu Elementary School and Keelung Girls' Senior High School in succession. After taking a two-year leave during her second year of high school, Tsai Chin gained admission to the evening division of the fine arts department at Shih Chien College of Home Economics with equivalent academic qualifications and graduated.
Tsai Chin entered the music industry because of a guitar she wanted to replace with a new one. The Central News Agency records that Tsai Chin saw a poster at a musical-instrument shop for 海山唱片's "民謠風歌唱大賽" and entered after learning that each of the top five finishers would receive a guitar. In 1979, Tsai Chin placed fourth in the competition and subsequently rose to fame with "恰似你的溫柔," included on the third volume of "民謠風." After the recording, composer 梁宏志 heard Tsai Chin sing and immediately declared, "I want her to sing my song; otherwise, I won't sell it to you." A music feature by Fount Media records that the song showcased Tsai Chin's lower-middle vocal range and also brought her the opportunity to record a solo album.
Taipei Broadcasting Station lists "抉擇," "出塞曲," and "你的眼神" as representative works from Tsai Chin's campus folk-song period, and attributes the title "Queen of Velvet" to her deep, gentle, classically inclined singing style. Hong Kong Economic Times notes that Tsai Chin has long been called the "Queen of Beautiful Sound," while also recording Tsai Chin's own statement that she did not dare claim the title and was simply grateful to have been born with a fine voice.
In response to the record-production environment, Tsai Chin expanded beyond singing by joining "天水樂集." Taipei Fine Arts Museum records that Tsai Chin, 李建復, 李壽全, 蘇來, 許乃勝, and 靳鐵章, concerned about the record industry's practice of "buying out copyrights," jointly formed "天水樂集" in 1981; the museum describes it as Taiwan's first recording studio.[TC5-29][TC5-30] The group later released the two albums "柴拉可汗" and "一千個春天."[TC5-31]
Tsai Chin also wrote directly to the authorities about her hopes for awards recognizing singers. In 1982, Tsai Chin sent an eight-page letter to 宋楚瑜, then director-general of the Government Information Office, proposing that Taiwan establish a major music award specifically for singers. The Golden Melody Awards' official list of past winners states that Tsai Chin received the Best Female Singer award at the 2nd Golden Melody Awards.
Tsai Chin also acted in films, while her songs found new audiences through cinema. Hong Kong Economic Times connects the enduring, cross-generational reach of "被遺忘的時光" with the film "無間道," saying that the film's impact turned the song into "a voice that was not forgotten."
Hosting formed another strand of Tsai Chin's career, and she also won a Golden Bell Award. A list from the Bureau of Audiovisual and Music Industry Development (Ministry of Culture) names Tsai Chin as the recipient of the Variety Program Host Award for BCC's "日正當中"; another list also names Tsai Chin in connection with PTS's "第一現場" and 寶象文化's "日正當中."
One public report documented a pause in Tsai Chin's stage career: a CCTV profile states that after her marriage ended in 1995, Tsai Chin left the stage for a time and returned three years later.
After returning to the stage, musical theater became a new field of performance for Tsai Chin. Beginning in 1998, Tsai Chin worked with the Godot Theatre Company and played 安琪 in "天使不夜城," which later toured mainland China.[TC5-01] Discussing musical-theater performance in an interview with PAR Performing Arts Review, Tsai Chin said, "I am serious about performing the musical well. I hope people will not judge my performance by a standard of only 60 points, yet I am also afraid of facing overly harsh scrutiny. I feel so torn!" PAR Performing Arts Review also wrote that the production contained more than 30 songs, over 20 of them performed by lead actress Tsai Chin.[TC5-02]
Concerts brought Tsai Chin into different venues: in January 2007, she staged two consecutive performances of "蔡琴2007經典歌曲香港演唱會" at the Hong Kong Coliseum;[TC5-09] the 2022 concert "蔡琴在雲門" opened with "抉擇" and ran through December 25.[TC5-11][TC5-12]
TVBS reported that all three performances of "2025蔡琴《不要告別》演唱會" at the Taipei International Convention Center in 2025 sold out, attracting nearly 10,000 audience members in total. In May 2026, Tsai Chin told the Central News Agency that "不要告別" was indeed a farewell concert, that she hoped to say goodbye to audiences while she was still in good form, and that the Taipei performance that September would be the only encore concert.
In an interview with Lianhe Zaobao, Tsai Chin summed up her approach to singing very directly: "I adjust my singing to suit my own vocal timbre. I don't strain upward; I reach downward for emotional depth, singing a heartfelt song very calmly."
