About the artist
Wakin Chau (Wakin "Emil" Chau Wah-Kin) is a Hong Kong and Taiwan male singer-songwriter, music producer and actor. The birthday is December 22. The birth year has two records, 1959 and 1960. Wakin Chau was born in Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong, and is the fourth of seven children. In the 1980s and 1990s Wakin Chau was better known by the stage name Emil Chau. The English Wikipedia records that Wakin Chau is very popular in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, mainland China and parts of Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam).
Of the two records of the birth year, MusicBrainz gives December 22, 1960, and records the artist name as Emil Chau. Wikidata gives December 22, 1959. From "有故事的人" the English name was changed to Wakin. Because of a sunny, healthy, upward image and style, Wakin Chau is called "the sunny wanderer".
In 1985 Wakin Chau recorded a first solo album of a life, "最後圓舞曲", but the record company suddenly collapsed a few days before release, so the album died without being released. From 1985, the English Wikipedia records that under the name Emil Chau more than forty Mandarin, Cantonese and English albums were released. The same article records a marriage in 1986 to the American Constance Woods. On July 13, 1987 the first solo album on Rock Records, "心的方向", was formally published. The album was later chosen among "Taiwan's hundred best records".
Under the artist entry, MusicBrainz lists "期待更多 付出更多" and "新樂園" of 1989, "不願一個人" of 1990, and "青鳥" of 1991. On November 28, 1991 the Mandarin album "讓我歡喜讓我憂" was released. The Chinese Wikipedia records sales of more than 2 million, that the title lead song quickly became famous across the Chinese-language region and set Wakin Chau's place as a superstar, and that the record, after "心的方向", was again chosen among "Taiwan's hundred best records".
On November 1, 1992 "妖兽都市 电影原声带" came out. In 1993 the Mandarin album "花心" was released. The Chinese Wikipedia records sales of more than 4 million across Asia, the IFPI worldwide Chinese-language record sales championship for the year, that the album's great sales marked the personal career reaching a peak, and that it set the place of "the national king of song" in the Chinese-language scene. Rock Records also for the first time made karaoke of "花心" and "孤枕難眠".
In 1995, within one year, four records were released in a row: the Mandarin albums "我愿意去等" and "愛相隨", and the Cantonese albums "弦途有你" (April 23) and "弦弦全全". Two music books, "風笑痴" and "爱了再爱", were published. In Taipei, Changhua, Kaohsiung, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore the "天下有情人演唱會" was held.
In 1996 there came in turn the Mandarin album "愛的光" (February 2), the English compilation "Forever Young", the Mandarin album "小天堂" and the Cantonese album "生·生活". In Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, the United States, Canada, Guangdong and other places the "96滾石弦全周華健巡迴演唱會" was held, close to a hundred shows in all, including 19 solo shows in a row at the Hong Kong Coliseum.
In 1997 there came in turn the Mandarin album "朋友", the Cantonese album "世界由你我開始" and the Mandarin compilation "光陰似健". The Chinese Wikipedia records that "朋友" sold more than 1.5 million across Asia, that the title lead "朋友" was very popular and started a heat in Taiwan, quickly becoming a warm song that had to be sung at school graduations, and that "朋友書", introducing musical reflections over the years, was published afterwards. The same year there was also "滾石24K 24Bit珍藏版金碟系列". On January 17, 1998 "我是誰?電影主題曲&電影原創音樂 = Who Am I?" came out.
In 1999 a period of change began, and the kinds of music production grew more varied and more international. Besides the English album "My Oh My" (February 4) and the Mandarin album "NOW 現在", and many solo concerts in Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China, Southeast Asia and North America, Wakin Chau also actively joined all kinds of performance work, including speaking for the Chinese version of the theme of the Disney animated film "Tarzan", co-hosting the 36th Golden Horse Awards with 陶晶瑩, and appearing as a guest at concerts of 無印良品, Lo Ta-yu, 黃品源, 成龍 and other artists. On December 7, 2001 "周華健 & Friends" came out. In 2003 "滾石香港黃金十年: 周華健精選" came out.
From the 2000s, under a depressed record market and the challenge of new musicians, the Chinese Wikipedia records that record sales fell sharply and music writing entered a low. In 2003, at a bottleneck in record production, Wakin Chau took the production team to the Yangmingshan International Hotel in Beitou, Taipei, to make the new album "Love Hotel·一起吃苦的幸福".
In 2006, to mark 20 years in the scene, the 29th solo album of a life, "雨人", came out, and the large solo concert "Wakin 20" was held in turn in Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Nanning, Taipei, Hong Kong, Hangzhou, Taiyuan, Changzhou and Singapore. In 2007 "水浒108 张大春现代京剧原声带" came out.
In 2008 Wakin Chau, with Jonathan Lee, Chang Chen-yue and Lo Ta-yu, formed the four-person super-group Superband. Fount Media records how the group came about: during the 2008 Lunar New Year, 段鍾潭, the boss of Rock Records, found that two old friends, Lo Ta-yu and Jonathan Lee, happened both to be in Taiwan, and asked the two to drink, eat and talk over old times; it is said that when the three gathered they had always liked to talk this way and that; that night they talked out a large plan; the next day, after the wine wore off, all three still remembered, and decided to carry it out; 段鍾潭 separately asked Wakin Chau to drink and settled the matter; Chang Chen-yue agreed at once on a single phone call; and the super-group took shape from this.
Fount Media records that the group, in a little more than a year, swept the whole Chinese-speaking region, and also left a brilliant page at the Golden Melody Awards. In September the band held a launch in Beijing and for the first time sang "愛的初體驗" as a band. Wakin Chau played bass or electric guitar. In December the group released a first single, "亡命之徒". The style joined rap and rock, and Jonathan Lee and Wakin Chau had in the past almost never tried to sing rap.
Wakin Chau is a singer whom Jonathan Lee helped to debut, and was nominated for and won Golden Melody Awards several times.
In 2014 Wakin Chau won best male singer at the Music Radio China Top Chart Awards. The album "江湖" and works in it received several other nominations, including best album, best lyric ("潑墨", lyric: 張大春), best arrangement ("潑墨", arrangement: 黃韻仁), best song producer ("潑墨", song producers: Wakin Chau and 黃韻仁), best music video ("潑墨", director: 陳奕仁) and best record project. On October 28, 2015 "周華健精選" came out.
Wakin Chau also once released in Hong Kong a first Cantonese album of a life, "有弦相聚". Most of the songs on it are popular Mandarin songs performed after new words were written. Wakin Chau also began to develop the Hong Kong record market. Besides starring in the Hong Kong film "超級計劃", a first Cantonese lead song, "曾經滄海也是愛", came out. After entering the Hong Kong scene, the Hong Kong media named Wakin Chau "the killer of heavenly kings". Wakin Chau was also voted into the top five of "most popular Hong Kong male singer in the Asia-Pacific" at Hong Kong's Top Ten Jade Solid Gold, listed with Hong Kong's Four Heavenly Kings.
Wakin Chau also once held in Taiwan a campus tour, "我和周華健的演唱會", and for the first time landed a campus performance in Kinmen.
At concerts Wakin Chau easily forgets the words, and so has the title "the heavenly king who forgets the words". Later a set of modern teleprompter equipment had to be fitted specially.
